Your Kids Won’t Be Bored on These 30 Fun Family Vacations

Let’s be real: planning a family vacation can feel like a full-time job you didn’t apply for. You’re trying to find a place that won’t bore your ten-year-old to tears, has decent food for your picky toddler, and, ideally, a spot where you can have a cocktail in peace. It’s a lot.

But that’s where I come in. I’ve dragged my own family across the country (and the globe) to find the spots that are actually, genuinely fun for everyone involved. No boring museum tours or tourist traps allowed. These are the best family trips that deliver on the hype and won’t make you need a vacation from your vacation.

So, pack your bags and cancel that lame staycation. These are the 30 fun family vacations you’ll be talking about for years to come. Trust me.

The Best Beach Trips for Families

Because sometimes, you just need sand, sun, and a shockingly easy good time. These beachy getaways are basically guaranteed memory-makers.

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, Hawaii

Okay, yes, it’s Disney, but it’s the most chill, beautiful Disney you can imagine. My kids were obsessed with the lazy river and the character breakfasts, and I was obsessed with the adults-only infinity pool and the Laniwai spa. It’s the perfect mix of magic and mai tais.

Beaches Turks & Caicos

If you want an all-inclusive that truly understands families, this is it. The water park is massive, there are a million restaurants (so no one can complain), and the beach is that impossible shade of turquoise you see on Instagram. It’s pricey, but they literally think of everything.

South Padre Island, Texas

Don’t sleep on Texas for a beach trip! South Padre is super casual, affordable, and has so much for kids to do, like the sea turtle rescue center and pirate ship cruises. We loved the laid-back vibe and the fact that we could just build sandcastles for hours without a care in the world.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

For a classic, Americana-style beach vacation, the OBX is unbeatable. Rent a big beach house with your extended fam, fly kites at Jockey’s Ridge State Park, and climb the lighthouses. It feels less like a resort and more like you’re just living your best summer life.

Clearwater, Florida

The sand here is like powdered sugar, I swear. It’s so soft. The water is calm and shallow, which is perfect for little ones, and a trip to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to see the rescued dolphins is a must. It’s one of the best family vacations if you want pure, simple beach fun.

Hilton Head, South Carolina

This place is gorgeous and somehow manages to be both upscale and super family-friendly. We rented bikes and rode for miles on the dedicated paths, went kayaking with dolphins, and ate so much amazing seafood. It feels safe, clean, and incredibly relaxing.

Theme Parks That Aren’t a Total Nightmare

I know, I know. The crowds, the lines. But I promise, these parks are worth it. Here’s how to do them right.

Walt Disney World, Orlando

Look, it’s the icon for a reason. The key is to not overdo it. Pick one or two parks, use Genie+, and book your dining reservations way in advance. Seeing my daughter’s face during the Magic Kingdom fireworks made all the planning totally worth it.

Universal Orlando Resort, Florida

If your kids are over princesses and into wizards and superheroes, this is your spot. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is truly mind-blowing, even for a non-Potterhead like me. And the rides here are genuinely thrilling—my teen couldn’t get enough of the VelociCoaster.

Legoland, Florida

This park is a dream for the 2-12 age group. Everything is built for them! The rides are exciting but not terrifying, and the giant Lego creations everywhere are just so cool. Plus, the on-site hotels are Lego-themed, which my son still talks about.

Dollywood, Tennessee

I was honestly surprised by how much I adored Dollywood. It’s got this incredibly friendly, charming vibe, the roller coasters are world-class, and the food is amazing (get the cinnamon bread!). It’s one of the most fun family vacations we’ve had, hands down.

Cedar Point, Ohio

This is not for the faint of heart. If your family is full of adrenaline junkies, you have to go to the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World.” The sheer number of giant, terrifyingly fun coasters is wild. It’s an intense day, but an absolute blast for thrill-seekers.

Disneyland, California

The original, and you can feel that nostalgic magic. It’s smaller and more manageable than its Florida counterpart, which can be a huge plus. We loved that we could easily walk between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure.

City Breaks Your Kids Will Actually Like

Forget stuffy museums. These cities are basically giant playgrounds if you know where to look.

New York City, New York

The energy of NYC is contagious. We skipped the boring stuff and went straight for the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, a ferry to the Statue of Liberty, and a giant slice of pizza in Brooklyn. My kids felt so grown up riding the subway.

Washington, D.C.

So many of the best museums are free! My kids surprisingly loved the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of Natural History. We rented paddle boats on the Tidal Basin and just soaked in all the history. It’s a great trip that sneakily teaches them something.

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago is such a clean and accessible city. We spent a whole day at Millennium Park, taking pics at “The Bean” and splashing in Crown Fountain. The Shedd Aquarium is top-tier, and you can’t leave without getting a deep-dish pizza.

San Diego, California

With its perfect weather and chill vibe, San Diego is one of the easiest family vacation ideas. The San Diego Zoo is arguably the best in the world, Balboa Park has a million things to do, and you can finish every day at the beach in La Jolla.

London, England

My kids thought riding the double-decker buses and the Tube was an adventure in itself. We did the Tower of London (so much cool, gruesome history), saw the changing of the guard, and spent a day at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour for a Harry Potter fix. It’s surprisingly kid-friendly.

Rome, Italy

The key to Rome with kids is gelato. Lots and lots of gelato. They were fascinated by the Colosseum (we did a kid-focused tour), threw coins in the Trevi Fountain, and ate their weight in pasta. It was chaotic and wonderful.

Get Outside: Our Fave National Parks & Adventures

Unplug the tablets and get some fresh air. These outdoor trips are stunning and seriously fun.

Yellowstone National Park

Seeing Old Faithful erupt is a core memory my kids will have forever. We saw bison, elk, and even a bear (from the car, thank god). The sheer wildness of this place is something you have to experience to believe.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

No picture can prepare you for how massive and breathtaking the Grand Canyon is. We walked along the Rim Trail, which is mostly flat and safe for kids, and did the Junior Ranger program. It was awe-inspiring for all of us.

Zion National Park, Utah

The towering red rock cliffs here look like another planet. We did the easy Pa’rus Trail and the slightly more challenging Emerald Pools trail. The best part? Wading in the Virgin River at the end of a hot day of hiking.

Acadia National Park, Maine

This is one of the best family trips for a mix of mountains and ocean. We hiked to the top of Cadillac Mountain to see the sunrise, explored the tide pools at Bar Harbor, and ate delicious popovers at the Jordan Pond House. It’s New England perfection.

A Dude Ranch in Montana

Want your kids to feel like cowboys? Book a week at a dude ranch. We went horseback riding every day, learned to fly fish, and sat around a campfire at night. It’s an all-inclusive adventure that felt so different from anything else we’ve done.

Costa Rica

Zip-lining through the rainforest canopy is an absolute thrill. Costa Rica is an adventure playground—we saw monkeys, sloths, and toucans on a guided hike, soaked in hot springs near the Arenal Volcano, and even took a surf lesson. Pura vida is a real thing.

Totally Unique Family Vacation Ideas

Tired of the same-old, same-old? These trips will definitely shake things up for your crew in 2026.

Alaskan Cruise

Watching giant glaciers calve into the ocean from the deck of a ship is just spectacular. My family loved the whale watching and dog-sledding excursions. A cruise makes it so easy to see a vast, rugged state with kids in tow.

Road Trip on Route 66

Lean into the kitsch! We drove a section of the Mother Road and stayed in vintage motels, ate at classic diners, and saw wacky roadside attractions like the Blue Whale of Catoosa. It was a hilarious, nostalgic adventure.

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, Dominican Republic

This isn’t just any all-inclusive. It’s divided into “villages,” including an amazing explorer-themed kid’s club area with trapeze lessons and a secret chocolate room. I got some actual relaxation time while my kids had the time of their lives.

Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

History comes alive here, and it’s way more engaging than a textbook. My kids were totally into the costumed interpreters, the blacksmith demonstrations, and the ghost tour at night. It’s a fun, interactive way to step back in time.

A Great Wolf Lodge

Okay, hear me out. The giant indoor waterpark is the main draw, and it will keep your kids busy for HOURS. But they also have scavenger hunts, dance parties, and story times. It’s a self-contained bubble of family fun, which is sometimes exactly what you need.

The Galápagos Islands

This is the ultimate bucket-list trip for animal lovers. We snorkeled with sea lions, walked among giant tortoises, and watched blue-footed boobies do their funny little dance. It’s a splurge, for sure, but it’s a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

How We Picked These Trips

So, what makes a vacation land on this highly curated, extremely official list? First, I actually went there or talked to one of our editors who did. We don’t recommend places we haven’t vetted ourselves. Period.

Second, it has to pass the “Is everyone happy?” test. We look for destinations that have something for different age groups and interests. If it only caters to toddlers or is a total snoozefest for parents, it’s a no from us.

Finally, we looked for a little something extra—that spark of magic that turns a good trip into one of the best family trips you’ll ever take. Whether it’s a perfect view, an unforgettable experience, or just a really, really good piña colada by the pool, it’s those details that count.
