Google Pixel 9 Pro

After three weeks with the Google Pixel 9 Pro, one thing is clear: Google finally got the hardware right. For years, we’ve accepted quirky designs and so-so battery life just to get our hands on that camera and clean Android experience. But this year feels different.

The new design is the first thing you’ll notice. It’s a complete departure from the last few generations, with flat, titanium-infused sides and a redesigned camera housing that’s less of a “bar” and more of an integrated “island.” It feels fantastic in the hand, more like an iPhone 17 Pro than any Pixel before it. And at 195 grams, it’s noticeably lighter than Samsung’s latest behemoth.

Design and Display

The star of the show is the 6.7-inch Super Actua display. It’s a 144Hz LTPO 4.0 panel that gets incredibly bright, hitting a claimed 2,400 nits in direct sunlight. I can tell you it’s perfectly visible on the brightest days. The bezels are razor-thin and uniform, finally catching up to the competition.

As I mentioned, the flat sides are a big change. They make the phone feel secure to hold, though some might find them a bit sharp after years of curved edges. The matte glass back on my Obsidian model does a decent job of resisting fingerprints, which I appreciate.

Performance and Tensor G6

Inside, the Google Pixel 9 Pro is running the new Tensor G6 chip. No, it’s not going to top the benchmark charts against Apple’s A20 Bionic. It’s not meant to. Instead, Google poured its resources into on-device AI and efficiency.

And it shows. The new AI Assistant features are genuinely useful, especially the real-time summary tool that can condense an entire email thread or article with a single tap. Day-to-day performance is snappy, and I didn’t notice any of the overheating issues that plagued older Tensor chips, even when gaming.

Battery life is also a huge step up. The 5,100 mAh cell consistently got me through a full, heavy day with about 25% left in the tank by 11 PM. On lighter days, I could push it to a day and a half. That’s a massive improvement and makes the Pixel 9 Pro a truly reliable daily driver.

The Cameras

This is why you buy a Pixel. The main sensor is a new 50MP shooter that captures stunning detail and that classic, contrasty Pixel look. But the real upgrades are in the other two lenses. The 64MP ultrawide has much-improved edge sharpness, and the 48MP 5x periscope telephoto is a monster.

Photos are, as expected, fantastic. The computational magic is on full display, with incredible dynamic range and color science. But video is where Google made the biggest leap. The Pixel 9 Pro now shoots in a “Pro” log format, and the stabilization is nearly on par with the iPhone 17 Pro. It’s not quite there, but it’s so much closer than ever before.

Where it still struggles a bit is with indoor motion. Trying to snap a picture of my dog running around the living room resulted in more blur than I got from the Galaxy S26 Ultra. But for everything else, this camera system is top-tier.

So, Should You Buy It?

At its $1099 starting price, the Google Pixel 9 Pro is a serious contender. It finally pairs Google’s world-class software and camera smarts with hardware that feels just as premium as anything from Apple or Samsung. The battery life is fixed, the performance is smooth, and the display is gorgeous.

If you live and breathe the Google ecosystem and want the smartest smartphone features around, this is a no-brainer. It’s the most complete Pixel Google has ever made. While the iPhone still holds a slight edge in raw video quality, the Pixel 9 Pro is the better point-and-shoot camera for photos, without question.

For the first time in a long time, buying a Pixel doesn’t feel like a compromise. It feels like an upgrade.
