I still get a pit in my stomach every time I hear a phone smack against the concrete. We’ve all been there. And even with the tough new glass on phones in 2026, a direct hit on a corner can still spell disaster. A screen replacement for my new phone costs over $300. A good screen protector costs less than $20.

The math is pretty simple. For the past month, I’ve been applying, testing, scratching, and dropping phones with a dozen of the most popular screen protectors on the market. Some are fantastic, feeling just like the naked screen. Others are fingerprint magnets that make your flagship phone feel cheap. These are the ones that are actually worth your money.

Best All-Around Tempered Glass

Spigen Glas.tR EZ Fit

If you just want the best and easiest installation possible, this is it. Spigen’s plastic alignment tray is basically magic. You clean your screen, pop the tray over your phone, press down in the center, and peel it off. I got a flawless, bubble-free application on my iPhone 17 in under a minute.

The glass itself is 9H hardness, which is standard, but the feel is what sets it apart. The oleophobic coating is excellent, resisting fingerprints better than almost any other I’ve tested. It’s crystal clear and doesn’t interfere with Face ID or the front-facing camera. It’s not the cheapest, but it’s the one I keep on my personal phone.

amFilm OneTouch 2-Pack

This is the value king for 2026. For about the same price as a single Spigen protector, amFilm gives you two pieces of glass and a very similar auto-alignment tray. The installation is just as easy, and the end result is almost as good. I found the glass to be perfectly clear and responsive on my Samsung Galaxy S26.

So where’s the compromise? The oleophobic coating isn’t quite as durable. After a few weeks of use, I noticed I had to wipe smudges off the amFilm protector a little more often than the Spigen. But for the price, getting a two-pack with this level of quality and ease of use is a deal that’s impossible to beat.

Best Film and Specialty Protectors

ZAGG InvisibleShield Fusion

For phones with seriously curved waterfall displays or for covering your smartwatch, tempered glass just won’t cut it. That’s where a hybrid film protector like ZAGG’s Fusion comes in. It’s a flexible material that feels tougher and more substantial than the flimsy TPU films of the past.

It has impressive impact and scratch protection for a non-glass material. I took my keys to it with more force than I was comfortable with, and it barely left a mark. It doesn’t feel quite as slick as glass, but if you need edge-to-edge computer protection on a curved device, this is the top choice.

Mothca Matte Glass

I was skeptical, but I put this on my iPad and I’m a convert. The matte, frosted finish is incredible for two things: killing glare and improving the feel for a stylus. Drawing on this with an Apple Pencil feels much more like paper, adding a satisfying bit of resistance. It also makes using the tablet in bright overhead light or outdoors way more pleasant.

The trade-off is a slight softening of the screen’s sharpness. You’ll notice a very fine, grainy texture, especially on white backgrounds. It’s not bad, but if you absolutely need the most pristine, razor-sharp image for watching movies, you should stick with a clear protector. For productivity and drawing, however, it’s fantastic.

What to Look For in 2026

It really boils down to two things: the material and the installation method. For most people with flat-screen phones, a tempered glass protector is the way to go. It offers the best feel and superior protection against drops.

If you have a curved screen, you’ll need to look at flexible film or hybrid protectors to get proper coverage. They prioritize scratch protection over the sheer impact resistance of thick glass, which is a fair trade-off.

And please, buy one with an alignment tray. The old method of using stickers as hinges is just a recipe for frustration, dust, and bubbles. The new plastic frames make a perfect install so easy that there’s no reason to do it any other way. A $15 protector is the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy.
