An iPad without a case feels great for about five seconds. Then the anxiety sets in. This is a thousand-dollar sheet of glass and aluminum, and the world is full of concrete floors and pointy desk corners. You need a case.

But the right case isn’t just about surviving a drop. It’s about making your iPad better. A good case adds a stand for watching movies, a keyboard for knocking out emails, or just a bit of grip so you don’t launch it across the room.

I’ve spent the last month swapping cases on my iPad Pro 11-inch and iPad Air, from ultra-slim folios to keyboard-equipped tanks. These are the ones that actually earned a spot on my desk instead of being tossed back in the box.

There’s a reason this is the classic choice. The fit is perfect, the magnets are satisfyingly strong, and it adds almost zero bulk to the iPad. It’s incredibly simple, waking the iPad when you open it and offering a decent two-angle stand for typing or viewing.

But let’s be honest: this is for scratch protection, not drop protection. The corners and sides are completely exposed. If you’re careful and mostly carry your iPad in a padded bag, it’s a wonderfully minimalist option. For anyone else, it’s a bit of a risk.

 

 

ESR Hybrid Case

This is the case I recommend to most people, and it’s the one I use daily. You get a protective TPU shell that covers the back and sides, plus a detachable magnetic front cover that works just like Apple’s. It’s the best of both worlds.

The clear back lets you see the color of your iPad, and the side has a proper cutout for charging the Apple Pencil 2. It’s slightly heavier than the Smart Folio, but the peace of mind from having protected corners is worth the extra 50 grams. At this price, it’s an absolute steal.

OtterBox Defender Series

If you need your iPad to survive a war zone, this is your case. The Defender Series uses a multi-layer design with a hard internal shell and a soft, grippy outer slipcover. It includes port covers to keep dust out and, on some models, a built-in screen protector.

The trade-off is bulk. It easily doubles the thickness of the iPad and adds a substantial 420 grams of weight. It’s overkill for a coffee shop, but perfect for a construction site or a toddler’s playroom.

 

 

UAG Metropolis SE

UAG delivers military-grade drop protection (MIL-STD 810G) that doesn’t feel like you’ve encased your iPad in a brick. The Metropolis SE has reinforced corners and a tactile, non-slip exterior that feels secure in your hand.

The folio cover is stiff and protective, with a strong magnetic clasp that also holds the Apple Pencil in place. The look is a bit aggressive for some, but if you want rugged protection that’s still manageable, this is a top-tier choice for 2026.

 

 

Best iPad Keyboard Cases

Turn your tablet into a legitimate laptop replacement. The typing experience on these is miles ahead of pecking at the screen.

 

 

Apple Magic Keyboard

The typing experience is, well, magical. The keys are crisp and backlit, and the trackpad is so good it feels like it came off a MacBook. The cantilevered hinge design looks fantastic and is perfectly balanced for typing on your lap.

So what’s the catch? The price is absurd, and it offers almost no protection for the iPad’s edges. It also adds a shocking 601 grams, making the combo heavier than a MacBook Air. It’s a phenomenal keyboard, but a terrible case.

 

 

Logitech Combo Touch

For most people, this is the smarter buy. The keyboard feels great, you get a full row of function keys for things like volume and brightness, and the trackpad is excellent. Best of all, the case and keyboard are two separate pieces.

This means you can detach the keyboard and still have a fully protected iPad with a versatile kickstand. It’s a bit thicker than the Magic Keyboard and the fabric finish isn’t for everyone, but the added functionality and much lower price make it the winner for me.

 

 

What to Look For in a Case

Your daily routine should dictate your choice. If you’re a writer who travels, a keyboard case like the Logitech is a no-brainer. If you’re mostly watching movies on the couch, a simple folio from ESR will do the job perfectly.

Decide where you fall on the protection-to-bulk spectrum. Maximum drop protection from a brand like OtterBox means maximum weight. A super-slim case from Apple feels great but leaves your expensive tablet vulnerable. Find your balance.

Finally, check the Apple Pencil support. A case needs a dedicated place for the Pencil to charge magnetically on the side of the iPad. A bonus is a flap or clasp that holds it securely so it doesn’t get knocked off in your bag.
