After three weeks with the new iPhones, it’s clear what Apple’s strategy is for 2026. The Apple iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus aren’t a radical redesign. Instead, they inherit some of the best features from last year’s Pro models, making the standard iPhone a much more compelling device.

Inside, the A19 Bionic chip is ridiculously fast. I haven’t found a single app or game that can make this phone stutter. And battery life is solid. I’m consistently ending the day with about 20% left, which translates to roughly 10 hours of screen-on time for my usage.

The iPhone 16 Plus is, once again, the larger version of the standard model. You get a massive 6.7-inch ProMotion display which is just brilliant for watching videos or gaming. It has the exact same A19 chip and camera system as its smaller sibling, so performance is identical.

The real reason to buy the Plus is battery life. This thing is a monster. I’ve been able to easily push it through two full days of moderate use. For heavy users, you’re looking at about 13-14 hours of screen-on time, which is among the best you can get in any phone today.

Of course, the trade-off is size. At 201 grams, it’s not a lightweight phone, and using it with one hand is a challenge. But if you want the biggest screen and the longest battery life without shelling out for a Pro Max, this is the one.

iPhone 16 vs 16 Plus: Which One Is For You?

The decision between the Apple iPhone 16 and the 16 Plus really comes down to just two factors: how big you like your phone and how important battery life is to you. The core experience, from the processor to the camera quality, is exactly the same.

If you prioritize a phone that’s easy to slip into a pocket and use with one hand, the 6.1-inch iPhone 16 is the obvious choice. Its battery is more than capable of getting through a full, busy day. Don’t let the Plus model’s huge battery make you think the standard one is weak, because it isn’t.

But if your phone is your primary media device, or if you simply have battery anxiety, the iPhone 16 Plus is worth the extra cost and size. The larger screen makes everything more immersive, and knowing you can leave your charger at home for a weekend trip is a great feeling.

The Bottom Line

For 2026, the standard iPhones feel less like a compromise. Adding the 120Hz ProMotion display was the single most important upgrade Apple could have made, and it brings the user experience much closer to the Pro line.

The new Capture button is a nice touch for photographers, and the A19 Bionic ensures these phones will feel fast for years to come. While the Pro models still offer a better telephoto lens and stainless steel build, the gap has narrowed considerably.
