Top Airpods 4 NC

Apple finally split its main earbud lineup in 2026, and it’s about time. The new Apple AirPods 4 now come in two flavors: a standard model and the one I’ve been testing for three weeks, the AirPods 4 NC. The “NC” stands for Noise Cancelling, and it essentially brings Pro-level features into the standard AirPods form factor.

This move positions the AirPods 4 NC directly against the company’s own AirPods Pro 3, creating a confusing but welcome choice for buyers. Do you want the best ANC in a stem design, or do you go for the in-ear seal of the Pros? After dozens of hours on planes, trains, and crowded coffee shops, I have some strong opinions.

The 2026 AirPods Lineup Tested

Apple AirPods 4 NC

This is the model most people should be looking at. The AirPods 4 NC pack Apple’s new H3 chip, which dramatically improves the active noise cancellation. I’d say it blocks out about 90% of the low-end rumble that my old AirPods Pro 2 could, which is seriously impressive for a non-sealing design.

Battery life is a real win here. I’m consistently getting just over 7 hours of playback with ANC turned on, and the new MagSafe case holds another 28 hours of charge. They sound fantastic, too—much cleaner mids and a tighter bass response than the last generation. At $249, they aren’t cheap, but they deliver a true Pro experience without the silicone tips some people hate.

Apple AirPods 4 (Standard)

So what do you lose by saving $70? The standard AirPods 4, priced at $179, look identical to the NC model. They have the same H3 chip for quick pairing and solid spatial audio, but they completely lack active noise cancellation and Transparency Mode. They just act like regular earbuds.

If you only listen in quiet environments like your home office, these are perfectly fine. The audio quality is nearly identical to the NC model (when ANC is off), and battery life is even better at around 8 hours per charge. But the second you step onto a busy street or a subway, you’ll be cranking the volume to dangerous levels. For most people, the upgrade is worth it.

Sony WF-1000XM6

You can’t talk about noise-cancelling earbuds without mentioning Sony. Their new WF-1000XM6 buds are, technically, still the kings of pure silence. Their foam tips create a perfect seal that blocks more high-frequency chatter than the AirPods 4 NC can manage. Their audio is also more customizable with a robust EQ.

But the experience just isn’t as smooth on an iPhone. Swapping between my MacBook and iPhone is seamless with the AirPods 4 NC, while the Sony buds can be a little fussy. And while Sony’s battery life is a strong 8 hours, the case is noticeably bulkier. If you demand the absolute best ANC and sound, Sony wins, but Apple wins on convenience.

Which AirPods 4 Should You Buy?

After weeks of testing, my recommendation is pretty clear. The Apple AirPods 4 NC is the new default choice for any iPhone user who wants great sound and top-tier noise cancellation. They blend the comfort of the classic AirPods fit with the powerful features we used to pay more for in the Pro line.

The standard AirPods 4 feel like a product made to hit a price point. They work well, but the lack of ANC is a major compromise in 2026. Unless your budget is incredibly strict, spend the extra money for the NC model. You’ll get a much better, more versatile set of earbuds that will actually let you hear your music in the real world.
