How to Install Kodi on Your Amazon Fire TV

You’ve got an Amazon Fire TV Stick, and you keep hearing about this magic app called Kodi. You’ve probably heard it can transform your little streaming stick into an all-powerful media center. And you know what? It’s true.

Getting the Kodi installation done on your Fire TV is surprisingly simple. It’s not in the official Amazon Appstore, so we have to “sideload” it. Don’t let that techy term scare you — it just means we’re installing it from a different source.

Follow these steps, and you’ll be up and running in about 10 minutes. Seriously. Let’s get started.

 

 

Step 1: First, We Need to Become a “Developer”

Your Fire TV has a security setting that blocks apps from outside the Amazon Appstore. We need to switch that off, but first, we have to unlock the menu for it. It feels like a secret video game cheat code.

 

 

Unlock Developer Options

From the Fire TV home screen, go to the gear icon for Settings. Then click on My Fire TV, and then select About.

Now, highlight the very first item, which is probably named after your device (like “Fire TV Stick 4K Max”). Here’s the trick: click it 7 times in a row. You’ll see a little countdown at the bottom of the screen that says, “You are now a developer!” Easy, right?

 

 

Allow Apps from Unknown Sources

Press the back button once to return to the My Fire TV screen. You’ll see a new option called Developer Options. Open it.

Select Install unknown apps. You should see an app called “Downloader” in the list. If you don’t have it yet, don’t worry, we’re getting it next. Just make sure to come back here and turn this setting ON for Downloader once it’s installed. This gives it permission to install Kodi for us.

 

 

Step 2: Get the Downloader App

The Downloader app is our tool for this job. It’s a simple web browser that lets us download files directly to the Fire Stick. It’s totally free and available right in the Amazon Appstore.

From your home screen, go to Find and then select Search. Start typing “Downloader.” It will pop up pretty quickly — it has a bright orange icon with a white arrow. Click on it, then click Download or Get to install it.

 

 

Step 3: The Main Event — The Kodi Installation

Alright, time for the magic. Open the Downloader app you just installed. It might ask for permission to access files; click Allow. You’ll also see a quick start guide pop-up; just click OK.

You’ll land on a home screen with a big URL entry box. This is where we’ll tell it where to find the Kodi file.

 

 

Downloading the Kodi File

Click inside the URL box and carefully type the following official address for the Kodi website:

kodi.tv/download

Then click Go. I always mess this up by typing “.com” by mistake. It’s “.tv” — so double-check it!

The Downloader app will load the Kodi downloads page. Scroll down until you see the Android logo (the little green robot). Click on it. A new window will pop up with different versions. For any modern Fire TV or Fire Stick, you want the ARMV7A (32BIT) version. This is the most compatible one.

 

 

Installing the App

Once you click that 32BIT link, the download will begin automatically. You’ll see a progress bar. When it’s finished, the Fire TV installation screen will pop up all on its own.

Just navigate to the bottom right and click INSTALL. Once it’s done, you’ll see a confirmation screen. Go ahead and click DONE for now. Don’t click Open just yet.

Downloader will ask if you want to delete the installation file you just used. You should! It’s just taking up space. Click Delete, and then confirm by clicking Delete again.

 

 

Step 4: Finding Your New Kodi App

After you install Kodi on your Fire TV, it doesn’t always show up on your home screen right away. Sometimes it gets tucked away at the very end of your app list.

On your home screen, navigate to the “Your Apps & Channels” row. Scroll all the way to the right and click the See All button. You’ll find the Kodi icon sitting there. To move it to the front for easy access, press the menu button on your remote (the one with three lines), and choose Move. Drop it right at the front of the line!
